Ethereum Staking Hits Record High—Even as Prices Swing
Ethereum staking just crossed a major milestone, hitting 35 million ETH locked in the network. That’s the highest it’s ever been, and it’s happening while ETH’s price keeps bouncing around unpredictably. Maybe it’s a sign that more investors are playing the long game, ignoring short-term dips for potential gains down the road.
The numbers come from CryptoQuant, which tracked a steady climb from around 33.25 million ETH staked in mid-2024 to the current record. The biggest jumps happened between August and December last year, but the trend hasn’t slowed. Even when ETH’s price took a nosedive earlier this year—dropping to about $1,500 in April—staking kept growing.
Holders Aren’t Budging
Another interesting detail? So-called “accumulation addresses”—wallets that have never sold ETH—are also at an all-time high, holding 22.8 million coins. That’s a lot of ETH sitting tight, which could mean fewer tokens circulating in the market. Some might see that as a vote of confidence, or at least a bet that things will improve.
But here’s the thing: while staking and holding are up, ETH’s price isn’t exactly stable. Right now, it’s sitting at $2,556.69, down nearly 4% in the last day. Trading volume, though, spiked by over 35%, hitting almost $25 billion. That kind of movement suggests traders are active, maybe cashing out or shifting positions.
What’s Behind the Volatility?
It’s hard to pin down why prices are swinging so much. One theory is that broader market uncertainty is pushing some to take profits when they can. Or maybe it’s just normal turbulence—Ethereum’s price has always been jumpy.
Either way, the staking numbers are hard to ignore. If more ETH gets locked up, supply tightens, and that could eventually push prices up. But “eventually” is the key word. For now, it’s a mixed picture: strong long-term signals, but plenty of short-term chaos.
The market cap dipped slightly to around $308 billion, but with no supply cap, Ethereum’s fully diluted valuation isn’t far off. That means most of the ETH that could be in circulation already is.
One last thing worth noting—today’s trading saw ETH swing between $2,575 and nearly $2,675 before settling where it is now. Not a dramatic shift, but enough to keep traders on their toes.
So, what’s next? If staking keeps rising, it might stabilize things. Or maybe not. Crypto rarely follows a script.
